Expatriates to China must fill out a customs form upon arrival. When entering the country, you are asked to declare electrical goods and luxury items such as cameras, computer equipment, etc. Keep this form until you exit to avoid paying duty on goods you brought into the country. There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency you can bring either into or out of the country. However, the holder must declare any cash exceeding US$5,000 or the equivalent. Furthermore, to bring out cash that is more than US$5,000, special procedures are needed in advance.
Visa and relative legal permits
Expatriates need a visa to enter China, without exceptions even for diplomats.
A valid passport is required and the typical tourist visa is for 90 days although this can be easily extended for another 30 days.
To obtain any type of visa, you will firstly need:
- Actual passport of more than six months validity with a blank visa page.
- One completed application form (The People's Republic of China Visa Application Form) with one recent passport size photograph (black and white or color).
