Shanghai History |
||
| The name "Shanghai" can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (11th century.), this town, which became a walled city in the 16th century, was the same as many other towns until the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842. Then the ensuing foreign trade brought Western influence to the city on its phenomenal growth. Since Pudong (East Shanghai) was declared a special development zone in 1990, the central government and foreign companies have revived Shanghai as an international trade and financial center. The city continues to grow crossing the new century, with new subways, highways crisscrossing the city, with the most modern stock exchange in the world and a whole new district in Pudong area. Now it is the focus for international investment, playing more and more important roles on world stage. |
